It is very important for your puppy in its first months of life to experience and learn about social skills and the environment in a positive way. Here at Heathfield Vets we offer FREE puppy parties for all puppies 1 week after their first vaccination to help both you and your puppy to begin teaching these lessons in a safe and secure environment.

You and your puppy will be able to come and meet other like aged puppies, furthering their social skills form those learnt in the litter at the breeders. This will involve controlled play and rest times with up to 6 puppies in the party at one time.
We offer a 4 week course for puppies with a 16 week old age limit (or younger for giant breed dogs!) this is to ensure safe play. Training for those over 16 weeks is available from outside trainers, of whom we have a local list to guide you with.

Puppy parties helps your puppy associate positive experiences with Heathfield Vets, helping them feel more relaxed and even enjoy coming to the practice for routine appointments such as health checks, boosters or if they are unwell.

Our parties are also a chance for you to receive help or guidance on any questions you may have about your new puppy, and advice on all the preventative care your puppy will need for his/her future.

The 4 week course will include:
Healthcare:
Our qualified nurses will advise you on flea and worm treatments – what products would best suit your pet and what they protect against or treat. Head to toe health checks you can perform at home – enabling you to examine your dog at home for any worries or concerns for his/her health.

Oral hygiene:
Dental care is essential as dental procedures for cats and dogs require anaesthesia, we will advise you on how to perform preventative care at home to prevent this, and discuss the products available to help.

Diet:
Your puppies nutritional needs are important, choosing a suitable diet and feeding regime is important and will change as your pet ages. Our nurses will give you advice on the specific needs of your puppies breed and age.

Microchipping and insurance:
Pet identification is important, Heathfield Vets recommends puppies to be microchipped at their 2nd vaccination. Insurance is advisable, but do you know what you are looking for in your pets policy? We can advise you on what an insurance policy can offer you, and what to check for in your pets policy.

First aid:
We hope you will never need to perform any first aid at home our out on your walks, but unfortunately we see some dogs who have needed it! We will talk you though some of the things you can do for your dog in an emergency situation.

Neutering:
We discuss the pros and cons for neutering and breeding, when to neuter and what the surgery and hospitalisation will involve for dogs and bitches.

Grooming:
This is an important part of owning a dog, and each breed of dog will have different grooming requirements. We can advise you on what training needs to be done at this age to ensure your dog accepts and enjoys grooming. Sam Mason our receptionist is at hand to discuss a day in a grooming parlour as she runs one of her own!

House training and general training:
Now is the time to start all training with your dog, from toilet training to sit and stay. We can give you tips and advice on what to try and where to go for your dogs training.

Puppy parties are by appointment only; please book your place now for a 4 week FREE course with our qualified nurses. Phone the surgery on 01435 864422. Parties held at the surgery, Friday mornings 11am-Noon.

Android mobile phone users can now download a free puppy buying guide. The Kennel Club's communications director Caroline Kisko believes the app will become vital for anyone interested in buying a puppy.
